Bill Parcells & The New Orleans Saints

Bill Parcells is widely recognized as one of the best football minds of all-time. With Sean Payton being suspended for the entire 2012 NFL season, rumors have begun to spread that Parcells (a former mentor of Payton) will  come out of retirement and coach the New Orleans Saints.

Parcells, who won two Superbowls with the Giants in the late 80’s and early 90’s with their relentless pass-rush known as the “Big Blue Wrecking Crew.” After his stint with the Giants he became the head coach of the New England Patriots, whom he brought to the Superbowl in 1996 but lost to Brett Farve and the Green Bay Packers. After the Superbowl Parcells didn’t even fly back with the team to New England, he instead went home by himself.

This was the end of Parcells in New England, and the next season he was coaching the New York Jets, who he brought to a Conference Championship Game. After Parcells “retired” from coaching the New York Jets, nobody believed that he would stay away from the game for long, and they were right. He then coached the Dallas Cowboys from 2003-2006 but was not able to get the team its’ first playoff win since the dynasty-era in the 90’s. Parcells then took an analysis job at ESPN after his failed attempt to return the Cowboys to glory.

Then in 2008 he returned to the game once again, only this time it was in a different magnitude. He became the general manger of the Miami Dolphins, who had the worst record in the league the previous season. The Dolphins made the playoffs after winning their division and became part of the biggest turnaround in NFL history. It should be noted that although the Dolphins won the division the Patriots (a division rival)  were with out their all-pro quarterback, Tom Brady, the entire season and still managed to win eleven games. 2008 was the most success Parcells had with Miami and they have not made the playoffs since. He left the Dolphins after the team was sold to new ownership in 2010 and rejoined ESPN were he still is to this day.

Parcells has been extremely successful in his NFL career but as you can see he has achieved less everywhere he has gone when you compare it to his previous job. Now the Saints are a good enough team that you can plug anyone in as head coach and it would result in double-digit wins. Even though Payton and Parcells are extremely close with each other (Payton worked under Parcells in Dallas) their styles are very different. Parcells is an old school defensive coach who likes to ground and pound while Payton’s teams are known for having a high-flying offenses. Parcells could help patch some holes in the Saints’ shaky defense but he should leave the offensive system in tacked.

One reason why Parcells won’t go to the Saints is because he is not yet in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and if he chooses to return to coaching he will have to wait six years to get eligible once again (one year for coaching and the standard five). Anything Bill Parcells related to get a lot of media attention and this story will not be any different. Stayed tuned.
