Philip Humber Perfect Game

For those of you who don’t know who Philip Humber is, he is a pitcher for the Chicago White Sox and the former number three overall pick in the 2004 MLB draft. Today he became only the 21st pitcher in MLB history to throw a perfect game when his White Sox defeated the the Seattle Mariners 4-0. It was exciting down to the last batter when his final strikeout ball got past the catcher and the runner had to be thrown out at first.

As rare as this instance may seem it has occurred four times in less than three years. Two occurred in ‘The Year of the Pitcher,’ (2010). Those four don’t even count Armando Galarraga’s spoiled perfect game that also happened in 2010. When you throw a perfect game your name will always be on the short list of pitchers that were ‘perfect.’ However this does not mean that Humber will become an elite pitcher because as bad as it may sound, everyone in the big league (besides John Lackey) has the ability of getting lucky once. Now I am not saying that Humber will never accomplish anything else in his career, but it is worth noting that many of the players who have pitched a hitless or perfect game the casual fan has never heard of.

On a positive note, regardless of what Philip Humber does or doesn’t do the rest of his career he will always be a member of one of the most prestigious groups in all sports.
